Effects of Dietary Phytic Acid on Lipids Profiles in Rats of Different Ages

Abstract
The effect of dietary phytic acid on the lipid profiles was studied in male Sprague-Dawley rats at different ages (1 month and 9 months old). They were fed on the nonpurified diets which were enriched with 0.12% cholesterol supplemented with 0.5(P_(0.5)) or 2.5%(P_(2.5)) phytic acid for four weeks. The level of serum cholesterol was slightly lower in young rats fed on phytic acid than in those fed on control diet, but it was comparable in adult rats. On the other hand, the liver cholesterol content was significantly higher in young rats compared to adult ones, in proportion to the amount of phytic acid in the diet. Lipid peroxide values were increased with age, although dietary effects were not found in rats of both ages. Dietary phytic acid did not influence the conversion of linoleate to arachidonate, as judged from the fatty acid composition of liver phosphatidylcholine. The effect of dietary phytic acid on cholesterol metabolism may depend on the age of rats.
